BANDANA.
Hi There, 👋🏻 i’m Andrea a fashion graphic designer focused on fashion product design for menswear and sportswear. Through this blog I want to share highlights and tips from the field i work in. Hope you enjoy and feel free to get in touch!
The Bandana is an accessory that has a very long history and also with meanings of a certain depth. The first Bandana was born at the time of the American Revolution with a gesture of love. A woman, Martha Washington decided to give her husband, General George Washington, a red square-shaped handkerchief that depicted the man riding between guns and flags. Subsequently the bandanas were also used to make their political affiliation visible or even to increase the sales of cereals (becoming the mascotte of Kellog’s).
Today the bandana is no longer just a square of printed cotton, but it has become a motif of stylistic expression. In Japan this accessory is very common and it styled in so many ways, from classic to street style. Indigo selvedge bandanas are a peculiar accessory from Japanese fashion.
Even if the most important part in a Bandana is the print, many designers are reinterpreting it with new fibers, such as blends of silk and linen, cotton and cashmere or wool and tencel. The motif, which we have always associated with the classic peasley, is also evolving. They range from lettering, to game boards, photographic prints and even the simplest tone-on-tone patchwork or solid colors with contrasting hand stitches.
Now bandanas are being used also to make patchwork garments, such as shirts, shorts, bags, lining and more.
